I have to confess that I am not a tortoise keeper. The tortoise houses and tortoise tables we build are the consequents of numerous tortoise keepers’ requests for bigger, smaller, wider, taller, insulated, etc. Consequently, I need to acknowledge our tortoise keeping customer who’s requests it has been that have honed our tortoise housing and tortoise table designs.
THE RANGE: We currently offer three sizes of tortoise housing
LARGE Tortoise House
X-LARGE Tortoise House
XX-LARGE Tortoise House
XXX-LARGE Tortoise House (soon, but not yet!)
RAMP: To give your tortoise a ‘leg up’, a ramp is provided ...
DRAFT CURTAINS: For enhanced creature comfort, the door opening is fitted with clear heavy strip curtains that thwart the draughts, without reducing the light.
WALLS: Granddad Robs tortoise house walls are faced with G’Rob’s own distinctive pressure treated brick effect section. The walls are insulated, and fitted with an exterior grade ply liner on the inside.
FLOOR: The tortoise house floor is from 12mm thick marine ply, so extremely strong and resistant to damp and urine. The floor is insulated and then fitted with a protective exterior grade ply liner on the underside.
ROOFS: The tortoise house roofs are weathered with G’Rob’s own tile effect 20mm thick, pressure treated, shiplap boarding. The roofs are insulated and have a protective exterior grade ply liner, on the underside.
INSULATION: Our tortoise houses have insulation built into both sidewalls, the back gable, the floor and both roofs.
LAMPS: Our tortoise houses are tall enough to allow for a lamp, with the power lead and plug access via the ventilation breather, which is set into the back gable.
ACCESS: Access to the tortoise house is via a hinged roof normally the R/H side, however if required we can hinge the left side roof.
MATERIALS: All boards and framing use in the manufacturing of the tortoise houses are fully planed and pressure treated for ground contact.
RUN (optional): As an optional purchase we offer a run made in the same distinctive Granddad Rob style to match the tortoise house.
TREATER (optional): The tortoise house is made from pressure treated timbers. This treater is a secondary coating that forms a water shedding ‘overcoat’ over the tortoise house which repels the moisture that can facilitate rotting. It is animal safe, can be applied to damp wood and dries clear.
I have to confess that I am not a tortoise keeper. The tortoise housing and tortoise tables we build are the result of numerous tortoise keeper’s requesting bigger, smaller, wider, taller, coupled with their invaluable knowledge of what their tortoise requires and as the keeper what they need to enable them to maintain a high level of husbandry. Therefore the design is constantly evolving, for instance as from 01/01/20 the houses are now to be INSULATED as standard.
