DON’T TAKE IT PERSONALLY
The Epsom is to a duck what a nest box is to a blue tit. Wild ducks and tits will be inclined to use the house for nesting and perhaps as a safe night roost. Please remember that being wild for the most part the ducks will come, take full advantage of your hospitality, rear their young and go, so don’t take it personally. Waterfowl need to be fooled into feeling this house is a natural nesting place, so it has to smell right, a few handfuls of messy reeds and a ‘splodge’ of bank mud in the nesting areas would not go a-miss. I have been told (but not tried) that to get ducks to use a new nest box line the floor with a damp turf, green side down.
CLEANING & TREATING
Most don’t, but if you feel the need, then clean once a year in the early autumn We are trying to encourage wild creatures to use what to them is an unconventional nesting site, so do not use strongly scented cleaners, just remove some of the old nesting and wash it down with pond water.
TETHERED OR ANCHORED
If the pond size permits, the nest can be tethered across from opposite banks. On larger ponds or lakes, it may be necessary to anchor the house in mid water. Tether pegs, mud anchors and chain are availed as optional purchases.
Whether floating or on the bank a duck nest is the duck world’s equivalent of a bird nesting box. Wild ducks will be inclined to use the house for nesting and perhaps as a safe night roost. Please remember that being wild for the most part the ducks will come, take full advantage of your hospitality, rear their young and go, so don’t take it personally.
